Peer Software announces native support for Nutanix Acropolis File Services to enable customers to maximize performance and control of their data in hybrid cloud environments.

In our discussions with customers, prospects and partners, we continue to encounter the same challenges and outright frustration related to the proprietary nature of data storage, especially for an ever-growing universe of unstructured data. It feels like a new era of costly and inefficient “data silos” is upon us. A plethora of storage platforms and cloud infrastructure has imposed their own unique barriers, adding to those created by applications, data, and people being dispersed across data centers and remote office/branch office (ROBO) locations.

Customers need the ability to optimize where they place application and data workloads, and have come to appreciate the performance and flexibility that hybrid cloud architecture offers to solve this. Additionally, they yearn for the scalability, ease of provisioning and manageability that the public cloud offers.

Building on its leadership in hyperconvergence, Nutanix has responded to this by continuing to challenge the status quo with its vision of “radical simplicity”, culminating in the introduction of Acropolis File Services (AFS). A software defined, scale-out storage solution, AFS addresses requirements driven by rapidly growing unstructured data that have been traditionally served by hardware-based NAS solutions like NetApp and EMC Isilon.

Easy management and scale-out capabilities are no longer limited to just VM or public cloud infrastructure. These can now be found on a single platform with integrated storage, compute, networking and virtualization that utilizes a modern software-defined approach to power innovation and new functionality at a faster pace.

Extending the philosophy of “radical simplicity” to data management, Peer Software has dedicated itself to supporting the needs of distributed enterprise environments for over two decades. We empower our customers with the ability to choose optimal local, public or private cloud storage to maintain, share and protect their data. We accomplish this via our globally-distributed Active-Active fabric that integrates leading storage platforms, and has the convenience of centralized management through a single pane of glass.

To further this common vision, we are pleased to announce that a joint development effort is underway to tightly integrate our flagship Peer Global File Service (PeerGFS) solution with AFS.

By combining AFS alongside our data management technologies, customers will be able to deploy Active-Active datacenter and branch office infrastructure with the power and manageability of the public cloud while seamlessly weaving new and existing storage systems together. Collectively, we will bridge the data divide between multi-site, multi-vendor and multi-cloud environments.

The end result - customers will be free to make best-of-breed choices based on their needs to maximize performance and control of their data.

So, how does our relationship with Nutanix translate into real world benefits? Some example use cases include:

Active-Active Global File Sharing and Collaboration

Geographically distributed teams utilizing office, graphics, CAD and engineering applications will benefit from fast, local access to project file replicas maintained in real-time across AFS clusters at multiple locations. Distributed file locking across sites ensures version integrity.

Active-Active Continuous Availability and Load Balancing for VDI

Users, administrators and architects alike will appreciate the high-performance, load balancing and continuous availability of VDI infrastructure powered by Nutanix, AFS, and Peer. Profiles and home directories are kept synchronized across locations in real-time so that VDI instances have fast local access to user data.

Extend the Reach of Nutanix Across Multiple Storage Platforms

Peer and AFS combine to enable Active-Active file services with WAN friendly delta-level replication across multi-site, multi-vendor and multi-cloud storage systems. By powering interoperability with many of today’s leading storage platforms such as Nutanix, Microsoft, NetApp, Dell EMC, Azure, AWS and more, customers can deploy AFS and co-exist with existing infrastructure investments.
